Product Overview
Hypertherm Part Numbers:
220971: This is an older/legacy part number for the FineCut nozzle. It is functionally identical to 420151.
420151: This is the current, standard part number.
Description: Nozzle, 45A - FineCut
Compatible Systems: Powermax45 XP, Powermax65, Powermax85, Powermax105, Powermax125.
Compatible Torches: All hand and machine torches that work with the above systems (when using the FineCut consumable cartridge or assembly).
Process: FineCut
Amperage Rating: 45 Amps
Primary Function & Purpose
The FineCut nozzle is a specialized consumable designed specifically for the FineCut process. Its key roles are:
Plasma Arc Constriction: It has a smaller, more precisely defined orifice than a standard nozzle. This tightly constricts the plasma arc, creating a denser, more focused stream of plasma.
Achieving FineCut Quality: This high level of constriction is what enables the "FineCut" process—producing very narrow kerf (cut width), minimal dross, and a square cut edge on thin to medium gauge metals (typically up to 10-12 gauge / 3-4 mm, depending on the system).
Gas Flow Management: It works in tandem with the FineCut Shield (220978 / 420152) to create a specific gas flow pattern that shields the cut and improves edge quality.
Key Features & Design
Smaller Orifice: The defining feature is its smaller hole compared to a standard 45A nozzle. This is critical for achieving the high-energy density of the FineCut arc.
Optimized for Thin Metal: Engineered specifically for cutting sheet metal with high precision and speed, minimizing heat input to reduce warping.
Part of a Dedicated Set: The FineCut nozzle must be used with other dedicated FineCut consumables. It is not interchangeable with standard consumable parts.
The Complete FineCut Consumable Set
Using the correct nozzle with its matched set is absolutely critical for the FineCut process to work correctly and to prevent immediate consumable damage. A complete set consists of:
Electrode: Part# 220895 (for older sets) or 420950 (common current number). The FineCut electrode has a slightly different internal construction.
Nozzle: Part# 220971 or 420151 (This part).
Swirl Ring: Part# 220970 or 420120. This is the FineCut-specific swirl ring.
Shield: Part# 220978 or 420152. This is the FineCut Shield, which is easily identifiable by its 3 small gas distribution holes on the face. Using a standard shield (like 420000) will cause catastrophic failure.
For modern systems with EasyConnect consumable cartridges, the entire set is often purchased as a single cartridge:
Cartridge, FineCut for Powermax45/65/85/105/125: Part# 220880 (replaces the individual parts 220895, 220970, 220971).
Applications and Expected Performance
Best For: Low current (45A) cutting of thin materials.
Material Thickness: Ideal for materials from 16 gauge (1.5mm) to 10 gauge (3mm). Can be used on slightly thicker materials but with reduced speed advantages.
Benefits:
Superior cut quality on thin sheet metal.
Minimal to no dross (slag) on the bottom edge.
A very square, clean edge.
Reduced heat-affected zone, minimizing warping on thin parts.
Faster cutting speeds on appropriate materials compared to a standard nozzle.
Symptoms of a Worn or Failing FineCut Nozzle
Deteriorating Cut Quality: The cut edge becomes more beveled, rough, or starts to produce heavy dross.
Wide Kerf: The cut width increases, losing the "fine" quality.
Unstable Arc: The arc may flicker or not cut consistently.
Double Arcing: Caused by a damaged nozzle orifice, which can lead to damage to the shield and potentially the torch.
Visible Damage: A worn, oval-shaped, or enlarged orifice when viewed closely.
Critical Usage Warning
Never Mix and Match: The FineCut nozzle (420151) MUST be used with the FineCut shield (420152) and FineCut swirl ring (420120). Using a FineCut nozzle with a standard shield will cause the nozzle to contact the shield, resulting in a dead short and immediate destruction of the nozzle and shield upon arc start.
Correct System Settings: The plasma cutter must be set to "FineCut" mode (manually or automatically via CNC interface). Using standard cut parameters will not yield optimal results.
