Primary Function & Purpose
This is a specialized nozzle designed specifically for the process of plasma gouging (also called arc gouging). It is fundamentally different from cutting nozzles (like the FineCut 420151 or standard 420300).
Directed Airflow: It features a larger, specially shaped orifice designed to project a wide, fast-flowing plasma stream at a shallow angle to the workpiece.
Metal Removal: Instead of piercing through metal, this airflow melts a shallow groove or channel and blows the molten metal away. This is used for:
Removing old welds.
Scarfing (preparing bevelled edges).
Weld defect repair.
Removing rust, cracks, or defects from metal surfaces.
Alternative to Carbon Arc Gouging: Plasma gouging is a cleaner, quieter, and arc-flash-free alternative to traditional carbon arc gouging (air-carbon-arc).

Associated Consumable Set
The 420001 Gouging Nozzle is used with standard-duty consumables, but requires a specific shield.
Electrode: Part# 220892 (for older systems) or 420911 (60A) / 420921 (80A) - A standard electrode is used.
Nozzle: Part# 420001 (This part - the Gouging Nozzle).
Swirl Ring: Part# 220890 (older) or 420110 (Standard 60A Swirl Ring).
Shield: Part# 420410 (Machine Gouging Shield) or 420411 (Hand Gouging Shield). This is critical. A standard cutting shield (420000 or 420400) cannot be used.
Applications and Usage
Primary Use: Metal removal and surface grooving.
Technique: The torch is held at a 40-60 degree angle to the workpiece and is pushed or pulled along the path to be gouged. The angle and travel speed control the depth and width of the groove.
Advantages:
Cleaner process than carbon arc gouging (no carbon deposits).
Significantly quieter.
No risk of carbon contamination in the metal.
Easier to learn than carbon arc gouging.
Symptoms of a Worn or Failing Gouging Nozzle
Reduced Gouging Efficiency: Less metal is removed, requiring more passes.
Uneven Groove: The gouged channel becomes irregular.
Excessive Splatter: The molten metal is not cleanly blown away, leading to more splatter around the work area.
Unstable Arc: The arc may sputter or fluctuate.
Visible Damage: A melted, eroded, or out-of-round orifice.
Critical Compatibility Notes & Warnings
CORRECTION OF QUERY: The part numbers in your query (220971 and 420112) are incorrect for this nozzle.
220971 is the FineCut Nozzle (45A). It is NOT compatible and is for a completely different process.
420112 is not a standard Hypertherm part number. The correct swirl ring is 420110.
Shield is Mandatory: You MUST use the gouging nozzle with the correct Gouging Shield (420410 or 420411). The gouging nozzle extends further out, and a standard shield would contact it, causing a short circuit and destroying the parts.
System Settings: The plasma system should be set to "Gouge" mode if available. This optimizes the gas flow and amperage for the gouging process.
