Hypertherm Part Number: 420168
Actual Name: Electrode, 45A/65A
This is NOT a Shield. The description is fundamentally incorrect. Part number 420168 is an electrode, which is the central, internal consumable that generates the plasma arc.
Primary Function: The electrode is the cathode in the plasma circuit. Its hafnium emitter is the point from which the arc is initiated and sustained. It is a primary wear item.
Amperage Rating: Rated for use at 45 Amps and 65 Amps.
Key Component: The emitter is made of hafnium, which has a high melting point and is consumed slowly during the cutting process.
Compatible Systems: This electrode is designed for Hypertherm Powermax85 and Powermax105 systems.
It is NOT a standard part for the Powermax125.
This compatibility list is highly problematic and contains a mix of incorrect and partially correct associations.
With "Shield" 420168: As established, this part is an electrode, not a shield. Therefore, any claim of it being a shield that "fits" with other parts is invalid.
With Part 220975:
220975 is a Swirl Ring for the Powermax85/105.
This is correct. Electrode 420168 and Swirl Ring 220975 are compatible as they are both from the Powermax85/105 consumable system.
With Nozzles 420158 (45A) & 420169 (65A):
This is a critical ERROR.
Nozzle 420158 (45A) and Nozzle 420169 (65A) are designed for the Powermax125 torch.
Electrode 420168 is for the Powermax85/105.
Mixing a Powermax85/105 electrode with a Powermax125 nozzle will result in improper alignment, catastrophic consumable failure, and terrible cut quality. The parts are from different torch platforms and are not interchangeable.
With "Hypertherm Powermax125":
This is misleading. While a Powermax125 machine can be fitted with a Powermax85/105 torch (as a lighter-weight option), the consumables are not cross-compatible.
If your system has a Powermax125 torch, you must use Powermax125 consumables (e.g., electrode 220779).
If your system has a Powermax85/105 torch, you must use Powermax85/105 consumables.
For Powermax85 / Powermax105 systems, the correct consumable sets are:
Shielded Consumable Set (65A): Part Number 220995
Includes: Electrode (420168), Nozzle (420169 would be incorrect; the correct 65A nozzle is 220788), Swirl Ring (220975), Retaining Cap (220976), Shield Cup (220974).
FineCut Consumable Set (45A): Part Number 220945
Includes: FineCut Electrode, FineCut Nozzle (420158 is correct here), Swirl Ring, Retaining Cap, and FineCut Shield.
If you are looking for the Shield that works with nozzles 420158 and 420169 for a Powermax125, you need one of two parts:
For 65A Drag Cutting (with nozzle 420169):
Shield Part Number: 420172
This is the drag shield used in set 220971.
For 45A FineCut Cutting (with nozzle 420158):
Shield Part Number: 220760
This is the FineCut shield used in sets like 220943.
Using Electrode 420168 with Powermax125 nozzles (420158, 420169) will cause:
Misalignment: The electrode and nozzle bores will not be concentric.
Unstable Arc: The plasma arc will be skewed and weak.
Terrible Cut Quality: Severe bevel, excessive dross, and rough edges.
Instant Consumable Destruction: The misdirected arc will violently erode the nozzle and the electrode, destroying them within seconds or minutes.
