Hypertherm Part Number: 220997
Common Name: Swirl Ring, Gas Baffle.
Compatible Torch: Powermax125 / Powermax125® (Both hand-held and mechanized torches).
Key Feature: This swirl ring is specifically designed for use with the 85-amp unshielded consumable set, which is optimized for maximum power and speed on a CNC (mechanized) cutting table.
Primary Function: To spin the incoming plasma gas into a tight, focused vortex. This swirling action stabilizes the plasma arc, constricts it, and centers it within the nozzle. This is absolutely critical for achieving a straight, clean cut and for protecting the electrode and nozzle from uneven wear.
Vortex Stabilization: The angled ports inside the ring create a high-speed swirling gas flow, which is essential for arc stability and cut quality at high amperage.
Component Protection: By perfectly centering the arc, it prevents it from preferentially eroding one side of the electrode or nozzle, significantly extending their life.
Cut Quality: A stable, centered arc is the primary factor in achieving a square cut with minimal bevel and low dross (re-solidified metal).
Material: Typically made from a high-temperature, engineered plastic that provides excellent electrical insulation between the electrode (-) and the nozzle (+).
The Swirl Ring 220997 is a component of the 85-amp unshielded consumable set for the Powermax125.
Unshielded Consumable Set (85A): Part Number 220996
Electrode: 220799
Nozzle: 220798
Swirl Ring: 220997 (This part)
Retaining Cap: 220977 (The "unshielded" or "bare" cap)
This complete set includes:
Critical Compatibility Note: The components within a consumable set are precision-matched. Swirl Ring 220997 must be used exclusively with its matched partners:
Electrode 220799 and Nozzle 220798.
It is installed inside Retaining Cap 220977.
It is not compatible with other consumable sets (e.g., the 65A drag set 220971 or the 80A shielded set 220990).
The Swirl Ring 220997 is compatible with the hand-held and mechanized torches of the following systems:
Powermax125®
Powermax125® G3 series
Primary Application:
CNC / Mechanized Plasma Cutting: This is its intended and most common use. The unshielded design (using retaining cap 220977) allows for maximum arc visibility and a minimal frontal profile on a CNC cutting table. A height control (THC) maintains the correct pierce and cut height.
Application Warning:
While it can be used on a hand torch, this is an unshielded configuration. This means the nozzle is exposed and there is no protective shield. Hand-cutting requires a highly skilled operator to manually maintain a precise standoff distance (typically 1/8" or 3-5 mm). Accidentally touching the nozzle to the workpiece will cause immediate and catastrophic damage.
Using a swirl ring that is not matched to the electrode and nozzle will cause:
Poor Arc Stability: The arc will be wobbly and unfocused.
Terrible Cut Quality: Severe bevel, excessive dross, and a rough, uneven edge.
Shortened Consumable Life: The misaligned arc will rapidly and unevenly erode the hafnium emitter on the electrode and the orifice of the nozzle, destroying them in minutes.
Double Arcing: The unstable arc may jump from the electrode to the swirl ring or retaining cap, causing permanent damage to these components.
Installation: During consumable changeout, the swirl ring is the first component installed. It drops into the base of the retaining cap (220977). The nozzle (220798) is then inserted into the front, seating against the swirl ring.
Inspection: Each time you change consumables, inspect the swirl ring. Look for:
Carbon Tracking: Black, sooty lines on the plastic. This indicates electrical arcing and means the part must be replaced immediately.
Melted or Deformed Areas: Caused by excessive heat from a misfocused arc.
Cracked or Broken Tangs: Physical damage that will prevent proper nozzle alignment.
Replacement: The swirl ring is not a wear item like the electrode and nozzle, but it is a critical alignment component. Replace it if any damage is found, or periodically as part of a preventative maintenance schedule on a CNC machine.
